We need solutions that are designed for ALL women

Specific groups of women are at higher risk of experiencing poverty because of other systemic inequalities, like racism, disability discrimination and migration status.

We need solutions that are designed for ALL women. Research on women’s experiences in recent crises shows the scale of the harm caused to marginalised groups.

Young women

Nearly a quarter of young women have skipped meals due to the cost of living crisis, with the same proportion living in unsuitable housing. 43% of young women report being in debt. (Source,1)

Women from Black and minority ethnic communities

Amid the rising cost of living, women from Black and minority ethnic communities in Scotland were twice as likely to take on debt than women across all ethnic groups. (Source, 2).

Disabled women

Twice the number of disabled women in Scotland have struggled to manage living costs compared with non-disabled women. 60% have had problems with energy bills. (Source, 3).

Unpaid carers

1 in 12 carers in Scotland live in deep poverty with almost half (47%) of female carers reporting cutting back on essentials such as food. Around a third report poor mental and physical health. (Source, 4).

Women with experience of domestic abuse

69% of survivors were unable to afford increased living costs without financial support from the perpetrator, and 73% were unable or struggling to leave their abusive partner due to finances. (Source, 5).
