The media
Media and culture have immense power to shape, and reflect, the way society views women’s worth. Yet women remain side-lined, stereotyped, or simply invisible in the media we consume and the industry behind it.
Women working in journalism routinely face abuse and harassment. Male-dominated institutions, systemic sexism and lack of family-friendly work practices are major barriers to women’s employment in the media and creative industries.
On screen, in print and in our arts spaces, women are objectified and mocked. Female politicians face questions about relationship choices, victims of male violence are disrespected, and women are less often invited to commentate on current affairs.
Engender Parliamentary Briefing International Women’s Day 2024 - #InspireInclusion
Mar 7, 2024: Ahead of this year’s Scottish Government International Women’s Day debate, we ask all MSPs to #InspireInclusion by highlighting the action still required to achieve equal representation for women and all marginalised people in public, cultural and political life. In the majority of spaces where decisions are made, men remain dominant while women are excluded, and as a result, sexism is perpetuated across public life.
