Engendering Change - Political Skills Training

Engender runs political skills training courses for women throughout Scotland.

The aim of the training:

The aim of the training is to provide women with the tools to help their organisations/community get their voices heard by decision/policy makers.

The training is aimed at women who are active in the voluntary/community sector in either a paid or voluntary capacity and who want to make a difference within their organisation/community, to have their case heard and listened to by decision/policy makers.

It is intended for women who have:

  • some experience of campaigning and trying to make their case
  • taken part in some basic confidence building/assertiveness training
  • an issue they want to do something about
  • a focus on women experiencing social exclusion

What will the training achieve?

The training aims to provide women with:
  • an understanding of decision making processes
  • an understanding of some of the barriers to equality
  • skills to put together and make their case effectively
  • lobbying and campaigning skills
  • skills to help them think strategically and build alliances
  • confidence to take their case forward

We particularly welcome applications from groups who are under-represented
in the decision making process.

Approach:

The training will draw upon women’s experiences of trying to make a difference, positive and negative. Participants will be expected to identify a real issue/area where they want to make a difference before the course starts.

The training course is delivered over 4 days, each day covering different areas and participants will get most out of the training if they attend all 4 days. However, it is possible to be flexible and to tailor the course and deliver each section/day on a stand-alone basis.
