Women and Asylum

Working with UNOJA Inc, an organisation who run a support group for lone mother asylum seekers in glasgow, we have been looking at the experiences of asylum seeking women.  The women we have spoken to have found that the asylum system lacks an understanding of the particular issues facing women - in particular, the system does not recognise gender based violence as a grounds for seeking asylum.

Engender took part in this years Scottish Refugee Council Annual Conference, hosting a workshop on the case for gender experts on country of origin to be part of the asylum process.  Engaging gender experts would enable the system to fully appreciate the climate and danger women are fleeing in their home country.  The workshop was well recieved and got a positive response from Tony Good, a retired anthropologist who has been involved with the asylum appeal process - see what he had to say about the workshop here
