The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) exists to encourage and support the development of a society in which people are not limited by prejudice or discrimination, ensuring there is respect for each individual’s human rights. The EHRC has achieved a great deal but there is a lot more to be done.
The Government, with the introduction of the Equality Bill, is ensuring that the momentum of progress is maintained.
We are looking for a Commissioner for Scotland who will help the EHRC make a full contribution to this important agenda by working to:
• Shape the strategy and priorities of the EHRC, and monitor their implementation and effectiveness;
• Provide effective corporate governance of the EHRC, ensuring that proper organisational structures, controls, systems and processes are in place and holding the executive to account;
• Chair the Statuatory Scotland Committee and champion the EHRC in Scotland;
• Build and maintain positive and effective working relationships with stakeholders.
Candidates will have:
• A passion for, and commitment to, equality and tackling discrimination;
• An understanding of the wider, strategic context of equalities, human rights and good relations in Scotland together, with an understanding of the work of the Scottish Government and Scottish Parliament and how this will impact on the work of the EHRC;
• Proven experience and understanding of management and governance challenges gained at a senior level;
• The ability to think strategically and to drive forward strategic development across a range of issues;
• The ability to build and maintain partnership with a range of stakeholders;
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
